What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is one of the most effective and widely used fertility treatments available today. During IVF, eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and combined with sperm in our specialist laboratory, where fertilisation takes place. The resulting embryos are carefully monitored as they develop, and the healthiest embryo is then transferred into the uterus, where it can implant and grow into a pregnancy.

IVF can help with a wide range of fertility challenges, including blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders, male factor infertility, endometriosis, and unexplained infertility. It is also an option for single women and same-sex couples building their families, and it can be combined with donor eggs, donor sperm, or ICSI where needed. At Barbados Fertility Centre, every treatment plan is tailored to your individual diagnosis, medical history, and goals so that you have the best possible chance of success.

Is IVF Right for You?

Deciding whether IVF is right for you begins with a thorough fertility assessment. If you have been trying to conceive for over a year without success (or six months if you are over 35), if you have a known fertility condition, or if previous treatments such as IUI have not worked, IVF may be the most effective next step. Our fertility specialists will review your history, carry out any necessary investigations, and talk you through your options in a clear, supportive way — so you can make an informed decision with confidence.

From your very first consultation through to your pregnancy test and beyond, our multidisciplinary team of doctors, embryologists, nurses, and counsellors is with you at every stage. We combine world-class clinical expertise with the warmth and calm of our island setting, giving you both the medical care and the emotional support that make a real difference on your fertility journey.

Frequently Asked Questions About IVF

A full IVF cycle typically takes around four to six weeks from the start of ovarian stimulation to the pregnancy test. Much of the early stage — including your medication for ovarian stimulation — can be completed at home, so your time in Barbados is kept as short as possible. Your fertility specialist will give you a personalised timeline at your initial consultation.

Because ovarian stimulation is managed remotely, most patients only need to travel to Barbados for the egg retrieval, fertilisation, and embryo transfer stages. Your care team will confirm the exact number of days based on your individual treatment plan so you can arrange travel and accommodation with confidence.

Our all-inclusive IVF packages are designed to be transparent, with the key elements of your treatment covered so there are no unexpected costs. During your consultation we will explain exactly what is included in your plan, and our team is always happy to answer any questions about pricing before you begin.

Most stages of IVF are not painful. Ovarian stimulation involves self-administered injections, which most patients tolerate well, and egg retrieval is carried out under mild sedation so you remain comfortable throughout. Embryo transfer is a quick, straightforward procedure that usually does not require sedation. Our team will support you at every step.

IVF success depends on several factors, including age, the underlying cause of infertility, and individual medical history. At your consultation, your fertility specialist will discuss realistic expectations for your specific situation and explain how our personalised approach is designed to give you the best possible chance of a healthy pregnancy.

Yes. IVF can be combined with ICSI (where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg) to help with male factor infertility, and with donor eggs or donor sperm where appropriate. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your diagnosis to give you the most effective path to parenthood.
