  • The Process of a Single Woman Selecting Donor Sperm at Barbados Fertility Centre

For many single women, using donor sperm is the first step on the journey to parenthood. At the Barbados Fertility Centre, the process is designed to be straightforward, supportive, and personalised to your individual circumstances.

1. Initial Fertility Consultation

Your journey begins with a consultation with one of the fertility specialists. During this appointment, your medical history is reviewed and fertility testing may be recommended to assess ovarian reserve, hormone levels, and the health of your uterus and fallopian tubes. These results help determine the most appropriate treatment pathway for you.

2. Choosing Your Donor

The Barbados Fertility Centre works with a number of reputable international sperm banks, giving you access to a wide range of thoroughly screened donors. Alternatively, some patients may choose to use a known donor, who will need to undergo infectious disease screening before treatment can proceed.

When browsing donor profiles, you can typically view information such as:

  • Ethnic background
  • Height and body build
  • Eye and hair colour
  • Skin tone
  • Education and occupation
  • Interests and hobbies
  • Medical and family health history

This allows you to select a donor whose characteristics and background align with your preferences.

3. Purchasing and Shipping Donor Sperm

Once you have chosen your donor, sperm is purchased in frozen vials directly from the sperm bank. The fertility team can guide you through the ordering process and coordinate shipment and storage until your treatment cycle begins.

4. Deciding on the Right Treatment

Depending on your age, fertility assessment, and personal goals, your doctor may recommend:

  • Donor Insemination (IUI) – sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation.
  • IVF with Donor Sperm – eggs are collected, fertilised in the laboratory using donor sperm, and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus.

For women with good fertility and open fallopian tubes, donor insemination may be an option. IVF may be recommended for women of advanced reproductive age or those with additional fertility factors.

5. Treatment and Pregnancy Attempt

For IUI, treatment is timed carefully around ovulation and may involve fertility medication to improve success rates. For IVF, ovarian stimulation medication is used to produce multiple eggs before retrieval and fertilisation in the laboratory. The best embryo is then transferred to the uterus.

What Support Is Available?

The Barbados Fertility Centre provides guidance throughout the process, from understanding donor options and selecting a sperm bank to coordinating treatment and travel arrangements. The aim is to help single women make informed decisions and feel supported at every stage of their journey to motherhood.

In summary:

  1. Fertility consultation and testing
  2. Review donor options and select a donor
  3. Purchase and store donor sperm
  4. Choose IUI or IVF with your doctor
  5. Begin treatment and work toward pregnancy

This pathway allows single women to take control of their family-building journey with access to internationally screened donors and comprehensive fertility care.
