Egg freezing or egg vitrification is a new, advanced fast freeze technology that allows preservation of an unfertilized egg. This process, which is similar to in vitro fertilization (IVF), involves collecting the patient’s eggs and freezing the mature eggs on the same day. Should the patient desire conception, the eggs are thawed and fertilized through IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) with the embryos transferred to the uterus.
While previous attempts at egg freezing were unsuccessful, recent medical studies have shown the introduction of vitrification or rapid freeze technique has resulted in a 99% survival rate for eggs with 92% successfully fertilized. This is an exceptional success rate.
Women can now choose egg freezing for medical and social reasons. For instance, women diagnosed with cancer can freeze their eggs prior to chemotherapy treatment to prevent the likelihood of infertility. On the other hand, women, who decide to delay conception for social and/or career reasons, could freeze their eggs when they are younger to avoid experiencing difficulty in conceiving at a mature age.
Approximately 1,000 babies worldwide have been born from this technique and birth defects rates are similarly insignificant to those born from ICSI with fresh eggs.
Barbados Fertility Centre is the first IVF centre in the Caribbean to offer egg freezing or egg vitrification.
